A Simple College Application Guide

How to build a smart college list, master the Common App, and write essays that sound like you.

Map your list

A strong college list has a mix of safety, match, and reach schools. Aim for at least two of each. Include at least one financial safety — a school you would be excited to attend and know you can afford.

Do not build your list from prestige alone. Look at graduation rates, financial aid generosity, and the majors you are actually interested in.

The Common App and beyond

Many schools use the Common App, but some public and state schools have their own applications. Start early, request transcripts weeks in advance, and give recommenders plenty of time.

Keep a simple spreadsheet with every deadline, every required essay, and every fee waiver form. A five-column tracker prevents a hundred small mistakes.

Essays that sound like you

The best college essays sound like the student wrote them. Do not try to impress; try to be honest and specific. If your essay could have been written by any of your classmates, it needs to be more personal.

Read your essay out loud. If you would not say a sentence that way in real conversation, rewrite it.

Ask for help early

Counselors, mentors, teachers, and family friends want to help — but they need runway. Bring drafts at least two weeks before deadlines, and take the feedback seriously even when it stings.
