Our Mission

Every student deserves a fair chance at their future

In East Mississippi, thousands of hard-working students face financial barriers that stand between them and the education they've earned. Rise Above Poverty Inc exists to remove those barriers. We partner with students, families, schools, and community members to fund scholarships, guide students through the college process, and provide the mentorship that turns potential into possibility.

Our vision is a region where a young person's ZIP code, family income, or first-generation status never determines whether they can pursue higher education or meaningful career training. We measure success by graduation rates, career placements, and the way our alumni return to lift up the next class of students.

Why Education Changes Lives

Education is the most reliable path out of poverty

Decades of research consistently show that higher levels of education correlate with higher lifetime earnings, better health outcomes, and stronger civic engagement. But in rural communities, financial barriers, family responsibilities, and a lack of guidance can put those benefits out of reach for talented students who have earned them.

At Rise Above Poverty Inc, we believe scholarships are only part of the answer. Students also need trusted adults who can help them navigate applications, financial aid, campus life, and career decisions. That's the whole-student approach we bring to every program.

Both graduating high school seniors and current college students are eligible, and non-traditional students are welcome.

Our main scholarship cycle opens in January and closes in April of each year. Additional micro-grants for books, transportation, and emergency needs are reviewed on a rolling basis throughout the year.

Yes. Rise Above Poverty Inc is a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. Contributions are tax-deductible to the fullest extent allowed by law, and every donor receives an acknowledgement letter for their records.

How can I volunteer?

We welcome mentors, application reviewers, event volunteers, and workshop hosts. Visit our Volunteer page to submit an interest form and our team will follow up within a few business days.
