Start with values, not job titles
Career planning goes better when you start with values instead of specific job titles. Ask yourself: what problems do I want to help solve? What kind of hours and lifestyle do I want? Who do I want to work alongside?
Values are stable; job titles change constantly. When you know your values, you can adapt as industries change.
Explore realistically
The Bureau of Labor Statistics Occupational Outlook Handbook and O*NET Online are free, credible tools for exploring careers. Look at expected earnings, growth rate, and the education required. Talk to two or three people who actually work in the field. A 20-minute conversation with a real professional beats an hour of Google searching.
Consider community college and trades
Skilled trades and certificate programs offer strong earning potential with less debt and shorter timelines than a four-year degree. In East Mississippi, nursing, HVAC, welding, electrical, and information technology are all fields with strong local demand.
Build experience early
Part-time work, internships, and volunteer service all count. Every job teaches something. Waiting tables teaches customer service. Working retail teaches inventory and teamwork. These experiences show up on résumés and in interviews for years to come.
