A Message from Our Founders: The Road Ahead

Founders Meeting

As we sit down to write this, we are reflecting on a journey that began over a decade ago in a small community center in Meridian. When we first launched RISE ABOVE POVERTY INC., we were driven by a simple, perhaps idealistic, belief: that poverty is not an inevitability, but a systemic failure that can be corrected through collective action and unwavering compassion. Today, as we look at the road ahead, that belief is stronger than ever.

The past few years have been a period of unprecedented growth and challenge for our organization. We have seen our impact expand from serving a few dozen families to reaching thousands across the region. We have seen our programs evolve from basic emergency relief to comprehensive systems of support that address education, housing, and long-term economic stability. But more importantly, we have seen the resilience of the human spirit in the face of immense hardship.

Reflecting on Our Core Mission

Our mission has always been to restore dignity. Poverty is often stripped of its human face in statistics and policy debates, but for us, it has always been about the individual. It's about the mother who can finally sleep through the night knowing her children are fed. It's about the student who becomes the first in their family to attend college. It's about the senior who can age with grace and security in their own home.

Every decision we make, every program we launch, and every dollar we spend is measured against this core mission. We are not just interested in temporary fixes; we are interested in transformation. This means addressing the root causes of poverty—lack of access to quality education, systemic housing instability, and the absence of a robust social safety net. It's a daunting task, but it's one we are committed to for the long haul.

The Challenges of the Current Landscape

We must be honest about the challenges we face. The economic landscape is shifting rapidly. Inflation, rising housing costs, and the changing nature of work have created new vulnerabilities for many families who were previously stable. We are seeing a "new poor"—individuals and families who are working multiple jobs but still cannot keep up with the cost of living. This requires us to be more agile and innovative than ever before.

Furthermore, the non-profit sector itself is facing a period of transition. Competition for resources is high, and the expectations for transparency and measurable impact have never been greater. We welcome this accountability. We believe that our donors and partners deserve to know exactly how their contributions are making a difference. This is why we have invested heavily in our data tracking and reporting systems, ensuring that every impact we claim is backed by rigorous evidence.

Our Strategic Vision for 2027 and Beyond

As we look toward the next phase of our journey, we have identified three key strategic priorities. First, we are expanding our "Holistic Housing" initiative. We recognize that without a stable place to live, all other interventions—education, job training, health—are significantly less effective. We are partnering with local developers and government agencies to create more affordable housing units and provide comprehensive support for families transitioning out of homelessness.

Second, we are deepening our investment in "Future-Ready Education." The jobs of tomorrow require a different set of skills than the jobs of yesterday. We are expanding our vocational training programs to include coding, green energy technology, and healthcare support roles. We want to ensure that the youth in our programs are not just finding jobs, but building careers that offer long-term security and growth.

Third, we are focusing on "Community Resilience." We believe that the strongest solutions are those that come from within the community. We are launching a new grant program to support local neighborhood initiatives and empowering community leaders to take the lead in identifying and solving local challenges. Our role is to provide the resources and support, but the vision must come from the people who live and work in these neighborhoods every day.

The Power of Partnership

None of this work is possible in isolation. We are deeply grateful for our network of partners—the local businesses, fellow non-profits, government agencies, and thousands of individual donors who make our work possible. Your support is the fuel that drives our mission. But more than just financial support, your belief in our vision gives us the courage to tackle these complex issues.

We often say that RISE ABOVE POVERTY INC. is not just an organization; it's a community. It's a community of people who refuse to accept that poverty is an unchangeable reality. It's a community of people who believe that we are all responsible for one another. It's a community of people who are willing to put in the hard work to build a better future for everyone.

A Call to Action

As we move forward, we invite you to join us in this next chapter. Whether you are a long-time supporter or are just learning about our work, there is a place for you in this movement. We need your time, your talent, and your resources. We need your voices to advocate for change and your hands to help us build the future we all want to see.

The road ahead is long, and there will undoubtedly be obstacles. But when we look at the faces of the families we serve, we see hope. We see resilience. We see the incredible potential that is waiting to be unlocked. And that is more than enough to keep us moving forward.

Thank you for being part of this journey. Thank you for believing that we can rise above. Together, we are making a difference that will last for generations to come. We are honored to lead this organization and to work alongside each and every one of you.

With gratitude and determination,

David Richardson & Sarah Jenkins
